The Aliens-Themed Level Design Document is a project I worked on for a level design class. I’ve chosen to showcase it because I feel it captured how I learned and the process of my learning.
It is fairly basic, but it does capture the evolution of a level concept to an actual level. The level itself had to be themed around a movie. I chose the movie Aliens because I liked the idea of creating some kind of laboratory.
The concept had a dramatic change partway through due to my original design not working well enough on a conceptual level. I chose to go with a new design that was smaller and less complicated. The map was based around Capture the Flag gameplay, so matches were hectic and fast, which is exactly what I wanted. I eventually got to playtest, which helped me to learn quite a bit about level design. Seeing people’s responses helped me to get an understanding of the importance of playtesting and player responses.
Overall, I feel this project acted as a milestone and a major learning experience.
